We are delighted to announce that the 7th International Tourism Studies Association (ITSA) Biennial conference will be hosted by the University of South Africa in the City of Tshwane, from 6-10th August 2018. This conference will co-inside with the 2nd Tourism Educators South Africa (TESA) International Conference. Our sponsors are the South African National Convention Bureau, Gauteng Tourism Authority and the City of Tshwane.
ITSA Biennial conferences have only once been held outside of the Asia-Pacific region, and never before in Africa. ITSA 2018 will take place in a world-class facility, the CSIR International Conference Centre and will give you the opportunity to experience true South African hospitality.

1st: “Tourism and the New Asia” was held in Beijing on August 9-12, 2006
Over 300 delegates from 30 countries and regions all over the world participated in this international academic conference, focusing on the dynamic economic, geopolitical and social developments taking place within Asia and their likely impacts on international tourism.
This conference was intended to foster dialogue among interested actors from the academic, political and industry sectors, about the relations between mega-events and urban tourism. The conference was held at Shanghai after the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and before the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. The conference addressed economic, cultural, and political issues in event tourism, including all scales of local and international events in cities.
2nd: “Globalization, Tourism & Development: Mega-events and Urban Tourism” was held in Shanghai on November 6-9, 2008
This conference was intended to foster dialogue among interested actors from the academic, political and industry sectors about the relations between mega-events and urban tourism. The conference was held at Shanghai after the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and before the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. The focus was on how international mega-events influence the tourism industry in urban areas, including their economic, political, social and cultural impacts. The conference also addressed issues in event tourism, including all scales of local and international events in cities.
3rd: “Cross Cultural Tourism in and beyond Asia” was held in Shah Alam, Malaysia from November 30-December 3, 2010.
The third ITSA Conference was held at the Universiti-Teknologi Mara in Malaysia jointly organized with the 4th Malaysian Tourism Outlook Forum. The ITSA Secretariat in Beijing worked with a UiTM Conference Committee, headed by Dr. Nor’Ain Othman, Deputy Dean (Research & Industry Linkages) and under the overall guidance of Dean Azis Majid. This was the first-ever ITSA Biannual Conference to be held outside of Mainland China and it was an unequivocal success thanks to the generous support and great organization by the Faculty of Hotel & Tourism Management at UiTM.
4th: “Challenges and Contemporary Solutions for Tourism Destination and Cultural Planning, Development, and Marketing,” held in Bali, Indonesia from August 23-25, 2012.
This 4th Biennial ITSA Conference brings together the world’s leading scholars of tourism to discuss Asian destination planning, development, and marketing. Keynotes and conference special sessions place special emphasis on cultural heritage, geotourism, and sustainable resort development.
5th: “Tourism, Cities and the Environment in the Asian Century,” held in Perth, WA from November 26-29, 2014,
6th “Tourism and Contemporary Cities” held in London, UK from 15-18th August 2016
The 6th ITSA Biennial Conference was held in London on the campus of the University of Greenwich in August 2016. The event was hosted by the Department of Marketing, Events and Tourism (MET) in the Business School and Dr James Kennell served as the Conference Chair. The theme of the 6th ITSA Biennial Conference focused on urban tourism and tourism cities. Several sub-themes were incorporated including: heritage and cultural tourism in urban and peri-urban environments; river and waterfront tourism; events and festivals; and the Chinese outbound market to the UK and Europe.
Awards and Certifications
ITSA provides awards and certifications to members, including ‘Best Paper Awards’ at forums and conferences. When you become a member, you receive official certification of membership in our non-profit organization.
